Designing effective protected area networks for multiple species

نویسندگان

چکیده

Protected area networks seek to ensure the persistence of multiple species, but their and extent are limited by available land conservation resources. Prioritising sites based on quality, quantity, size, or connectivity is often proposed; potentially using occupancy metapopulation dynamics individual threatened species as surrogates for network effectiveness. However, which with overlapping habitat requirements differ, implications this optimal designs rarely tested. We parameterise models 5 papyrus-specialist birds occupying a papyrus swamp in Uganda, each possess subtly different ecological characteristics preferences. estimate how responds strategies prioritising patch number, quality connectivity. The approach differed depending structure species. rank order also varied overall wetland desired threshold. For achieved highest levels population size an equivalent amount conserved. connected patches showed greatest overlap across thus most effective strategy conserve same prioritised This emphasises importance species' planning, demonstrates utility protected spatial patches, when aiming differing uncertain requirements.

Suitability determining in protected area for wildlife (Case study: Geno protected area)

Introduction: Rangelands constitute almost 52 percent of the country area computed as 164 million ha. The extent of rangelands has been estimated 84 million ha in Iran and they have been classified as good, moderate to poor and poor to very poor ones ranged as almost 10, 42 and 48 percent, respectively. One of the fundamental problems concerning land uses of rangelands is that Rangeland are not...

Species-free species distribution models describe macroecological properties of protected area networks

Among the greatest challenges facing the conservation of plants and animal species in protected areas are threats from a rapidly changing climate. An altered climate creates both challenges and opportunities for improving the management of protected areas in networks. Increasingly, quantitative tools like species distribution modeling are used to assess the performance of protected areas and pr...

Designing effective reserve networks for nonequilibrium metacommunities.

The proliferation of efficient fishing practices has promoted the depletion of commercial stocks around the world and caused significant collateral damage to marine habitats. Recent empirical studies have shown that marine reserves can play an important role in reversing these effects. Equilibrium metapopulation models predict that networks of marine reserves can provide similar benefits so lon...

Multi-Objective Location-Routing Model With Multiple Transportation Modes For Designing Relief Networks Under Uncertainty‎

A three-level relief chain including a number of suppliers in fixed locations, candidate distribution centers and affected areas at certain points are considered. A mixed integer nonlinear programming model is proposed for open transportation location routing problem by considering split delivery of demand. To solve a realistic problem, foregoing parameters are considered as fuzzy in our propos...
